“You, the charismatic renewal, have received a great gift from the Lord. Your movement’s birth
was willed by the Holy Spirit to be “a current of grace in the Church and for the Church”. This is
your identity: to be a current of grace.”
ADDRESS OF POPE FRANCIS
TO PARTICIPANTS IN THE 37TH NATIONAL CONVOCATION OF THE RENEWAL IN THE HOLY SPIRIT
Olympic Stadium
Sunday, 1 June 2014
In 2017, the Charismatic Renewal celebrated its 50th anniversary. Currently, it is estimated that 120 million Catholics in
235 countries have experienced this outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The Catholic Charismatic Renewal is not outside of the
Roman Catholic Church, but it is solidly rooted in the church in obedience to the Pope and clergy.
The Catholic Charismatic Renewal has no earthly founder. The year was 1967, when a group of students on retreat at
Duquesne University experienced the presence of the Holy Spirit. It was the beginning of the Catholic Charismatic
Renewal. One of the students on that retreat was Pattie Mansfield who currently lives in Covington, Louisiana with her
husband, Al.
In 1969, Fr. Harold Cohen, a Jesuit priest, began having prayer meetings at Loyola University. In 1975, Fr. Emile La Franz
began having mass and prayer meetings at The Center of Jesus the Lord Catholic Church located at 1236 North Rampart
Street in New Orleans, Louisiana at the former Carmelite monastery and formed a Catholic Charismatic Community. That
community continues today at its new location at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church located at 1237 Louisiana
Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana and is led by Fr. Lance Campo.
The Center of Jesus the Lord is a welcoming Roman Catholic Charismatic Community. It fosters this sense of community
by encouraging participation in numerous parish ministries and events. These include Our Father’s Table which helps
feed and minister to our less fortunate brothers and sisters who are homeless and hungry. Also, the annual Good Friday
“Sole’s for Christ” Walk is attended by 300-500 people annually. As participants visit nine churches, they experience the
Stations of the Cross performed by the Emile Vincent Players and accompanied by music from the Center of Jesus the
Lord music ministry.
We found our family here.
In a key message from Pope Francis in 2015 to the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, he stated the following:
“If the experience of Baptism in the Holy Spirit has helped your faith, in Jesus Christ Lord and Savior, to be born again, if
through that experience you have recognized Him as the only God of your life, Persevere in the faith and give witness to it.”
With the Pope’s encouragement, the Center of Jesus the Lord continues to foster the continuance of the Baptism of the
Holy Spirit for all those seeking the power of the Holy Spirt in their lives.
We invite you to attend our Sunday Mass at 10:30am.
May the Lord’s Peace with you always.
